Can Bath Bombs Clog Your Drain?

We’ve all needed a hot bath after a tiring, stressful day, and nothing feels better than soaking in water that smells like lavender fields. Bath bombs have been a great addition to our bath routine, and it has especially grown popular of late. And with all the variety that's available in the market, we can see why.

Bath bombs are the perfect items to add to your bath to have that spa-like moment in your home. It has ingredients beneficial to the skin as it cleanses and rejuvenates throughout the entire soak. While these ingredients can be good for you and your body, they can be pretty brutal when it comes to your drains.

What are bath bombs made of?

In general, a bath bomb is made using a combination of oil, scent, and salt. The amount of each ingredient differs depending on the manufacturer. But, the basic soluble ingredients of bath bombs are Epsom salt and baking soda. Other components include corn starch, cocoa butter, essential oils, and sometimes even glitter!

Ingredients such as corn starch and oil dry up and stick to the drains upon cooling. They collect hair and other residues over time, resulting in nasty
clogged tub drains.

Tips to Prevent Clogging from Bath Bombs

If you’re not careful, the frequent use of bath bombs could result in severe clogging. Like any pipe problem, there are simple yet effective ways you can do to prevent it from happening.

Install Drain Barriers

Invest in drain barriers that you can install in the opening of your bathtub drains. This way, it not only blocks any insoluble components from bath bombs but also prevents other solid items from getting into your pipes.

Wrap the Bath Bomb in Nylon Cloth

For better drain protection, you can wrap a nylon cloth around the bath bomb before use. Make sure to tie the fabric securely to prevent any residue from getting into the drain. You can still get the same effect as your bath bomb will dissolve in water as it should, but without unnecessarily hurting your bathroom pipes.

After-Bath Drain Care

After draining your bath, you can pour hot water down the drain to wash out anything that might have stuck onto the pipes. If you want to be thorough, a more effective procedure involves pouring vinegar and baking soda mixture and leaving it for a few minutes. Finish this method by rinsing with hot water.

How About Bath Bombs in Hot Tubs?

While it’s perfectly safe to use bath bombs in regular bathtubs, it’s an entirely different story when it comes to hot tubs. Hot tubs operate uniquely, as their drains aren’t the same as the ones in a regular bathtub. Using bath bombs may cause the ingredients to damage the sensitive tubes in your hot tub, which could eventually clog the jets and hoses in the long run.
